Is running enough?

I was outside running yesterday (loving and hating it)-- loving it because it felt so amazing to be outside in the fall air... and hating it because I know many people choose outside (instead of Vie) for their exercise- ha!

I'm completely joking, I love being outside! I mean, I was outside just like everyone else and I obviously could have chosen a treadmill if I wanted to. 🙂

But as I was running, I started thinking about how running and outside training won't cut it. As we get older we lose muscle mass each year (unless we counter the aging process with resistance training). Running won't stop the decrease in muscle mass.

It happens slowly as you age, just like wrinkles. But, unlike wrinkles you actually have control over your muscle mass. You can absolutely slow it down!

Especially after age 30, you begin to lose as much as 3% to 5% of your muscle mass every 10 years. Most people will lose about 30% of their muscle mass during their lifetime. Less muscle means greater weakness and less mobility, both of which increase your risk of falls, fractures and longer recovery times.

If you've only been doing cardio and not strength training, don't worry! It's never too late to rebuild and maintain muscle. The best way to build muscle mass, no matter your age, is through progressive resistance training. It allows you to gradually increase your workout with more weight, reps, and sets as your strength and endurance improve.

Diet also plays a big part in building muscle. As you age, you need more protein. If you want more info about the right way to get more protein into your diet, reach out to let me know and I'll have our nutritionist put some specific tips together.

I can also help you figure out how to incorporate strength training into your routine in a way that fits your schedule and budget. Just respond to this email and let's talk!

Personal message from Vie co-owner Heather Dupuis

You may or may not know this, but my business partner (and co-owner of Vie), Lauren Casanova Morris recently got married and ventured off to California.

I’ve been left to reflect on how this change effects Vie and what I need to do to preserve what Vie is and was always intended to be-- something that was set in motion well before we opened our doors in 2004.

Over the last 10 days, I’ve sat down with some amazing people at Vie that were all ready to do one thing.... create change in their lives.

(Keep reading until the end. There's something special for you...)

Meeting with so many of our clients individually has me thinking about you and wondering if you’re achieving the fitness goals you set for yourself at the top of the year?

Could it be you fell off the workout wagon 3 months, 6 months, or a year ago?

Possibly you've never hit the gym regularly but know it's time?

Maybe you got injured and are now afraid to be active?

Are you crushing workouts 6 days a week, but your diet is sabotaging you?

Perhaps you had a baby and you don't know where to start?

Maybe you've plateaued or have outgrown your trainer and it's time to match you up with one that’s new and fresh?

Sometimes it's important to take a moment to reassess, re-center, and restart.

I’ve been doing that at Vie.

Vie is a third place (other than work or home) where Ann Arborites can pursue healthy balanced lives guided by smart trainers, all with Zingerman's style service (aka anything you want, we have it or we’ll get it).

Equally as important, we are a socially connected community of clients and staff. Our goal is that everyone (including the owner) knows you by name.

Lauren leaving caused me to reassess things and I believe some of our initial goals have gotten away from us over the years.

To get back on track, one of the biggest shifts I'm making in this new phase of Vie is in redirecting my energy from one-to-one training to connecting with more of our clients personally.

Instead of training one person in an hour, I now visit classes and the training floor to connect with 15 or more clients.

I'm also now available to all of you (both new and existing clients) who are interested in setting up a complimentary wellness consultation to determine what road map makes the most sense for you.

Regardless of what you’ve tried in the past and whether it worked or didn’t, it’s my mission to personally help you get real results.

We’ll establish a plan using SMART goals that will get you the change you’re looking for in the least amount of time.

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Result driven
Time-bound

Your body, schedule and lifestyle are unique. That’s why trying what everybody else is doing won’t always work for you. Your consultation will be based on your goals, time, budget, and interests.

Honestly, I want to set up a quarterly session with you to check in on how you're doing. Goals change. Lives change. Motivation changes. I’m here to help.

Your wellness consultation can be as simple as assessing your current workouts, comparing them to your goals and giving you a few simple suggestions.

It could also be a full assessment with measurements (body fat %, girth, and scale) and a detailed plan for moving forward.

If it’s time to reassess, re-center and restart your fitness journey, I’m excited to help you get back on track. I have room for 8 more wellness consultations over the next week.

Send me an email and we’ll set a time where I can advise you on the best steps for you-- what your body needs right now and the course of action that will get you the results you deserve.

Cheers to happy, healthy, balanced, living!

Classical Pilates in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Starting a regular Ann Arbor Pilates routine is a great way to meet your fitness goals, whether you’d like to increase flexibility and muscle tone, or lose weight and have overall better health. And there is an affordable option for classes and personal training right in Ann Arbor: Vie Fitness & Spa.

At Vie, we employ certified trainers who use classical teaching methods based directly on the work of Joseph Pilates, a German self-defense instructor who created Pilates almost 100 years ago. He created Pilates to balance the body, mind and spirit by using slow, controlled movements to tighten, tone and strengthen the body. As years have passed, some Pilates programs have changed to include additional elements such as dance, but at Vie, we practice what’s called Classical Pilates that holds true to the Pilates practices by Joseph Pilates with very little deviation. Our instructors are trained through the New York Pilates Studio® Teacher Certification Program, the first and oldest professional Pilates training program in the world with the highest standard of classical Pilates instruction in the industry. We are proud to be Ann Arbor’s exclusive New York Authentic Pilates studio.

As a Vie member, you reap the benefits of all this training from our dedicated instructors. Whether you choose to engage in one-on-one sessions with a certified fitness trainer, private classes, or studio classes, the classical Pilates method offered at Vie will help you on the path to enjoying a healthier mind and body.

Through our experts, you can learn various movements such as the Vie Roll up, which will help you improve your core, back and hamstring muscles. This movement is often compared to regular sit-ups because of their similar effects on the muscle. However, unlike conventional sit-ups, this roll up movement produces better effects on the back, leg and core muscles as well as your spine. There are also several other exercises that our skilled staff can teach you. One is the Series of Five, which many refer to as the best routine to develop perfectly chiseled abs. Another is the Pilates Push Up, which is an advanced movement that develops the power and agility of your muscles.
Through this exercise routine, you can develop a well-toned abdomen and stronger back muscles. You can also benefit from developing longer, leaner and more flexible muscles which most traditional strength workouts fail to provide. Aside from the improved muscles and body strength, you can also lower your risks of getting physically injured.

Pilates works for every body type and our instructors have the training to modify a course of exercise that will perfectly align with your fitness goals. Regardless of your age or current physical condition, you will surely find this routine as a great compliment to cardio classes and other conventional strength workouts.
We believe that our pure methods of teaching and classically trained instructors make Vie the Best Pilates studio in Michigan. Add some Pilates into your workout routine today and see how much your body can change over time through our private and small group classes. Our team of certified Classical Pilates trainers is always available to discuss the many benefits of our programs, so give us a call to ask questions.

Classic Pilates Exercise

Classic Pilates Exercise

Contrary to many that believe workouts need to be rigorous and high impact to achieve a target figure, there are alternative ways such as Pilates that can produce better and more long-lasting health benefits. A regular Ann Arbor Pilates exercise routine is a great way to meet your fitness goals while also creating overall better health. Pilates is among the most famous strength exercise programs that health enthusiasts all over the world use to improve their legs, arms, core and glute muscles. This routine involves the use of repetitive movements, slow breathing exercises, intense mind and body concentration and accurate positioning of your entire body.

At Vie, our Pilates instructors are fully trained to teach accurate body movements. We employ certified trainers who use classical teaching methods. Through our experts, you can learn various movements like the ones explained below. These classic Pilates exercises will help to tighten your core, improve your flexibility and enhance your overall physical strength.

Full Body Roll Up

The Full Body Roll Up strengthens your core, while also stretching your back, hip flexors and hamstrings. It is much more productive than crunches or sit-ups because its full range of motion works to engage more of your muscle fibers.

– Start by laying flat on your back and rolling into a C curve, then uncurling as you exhale back into the mat.
– Make sure to keep your feet on the ground. It is easiest to do this exercise when you can articulate your spine bone by bone without gaps.

Series of Five

The Pilates series of 5 is a group of classic Pilates mat moves focused on your core. Many say it’s the perfect ab exercise routine. It consists of 5-10 reps each of these five exercises:
– single leg stretch
– double leg stretch
– single straight leg stretch
– double straight leg stretch
– criss cross.

While performing these exercises, use your abdominal muscles to keep your upper body curled and to keep your pelvis stable. Don’t worry if the positions seem too challenging, there are modifications for beginners.

Pilates Push Ups

The Pilates push-up is an advanced move because it takes quite a bit of core strength, arm strength and stability to fully perform.

– Begin by standing with good Pilates posture and your arms straight up over your head.
– Next you pull your abs in, curve your spine down and begin to roll toward the mat.
– Walk out to a front support plank position.
– Hold plank position with straight arms and lower to the mat.
– Walk back, roll up to standing and inhale as you lift your arms.
Add some Pilates into your workout routine today and see how much your body can change over time through our private and small group classes. Our team of certified Classical Pilates trainers is always available to discuss the many benefits of our programs: please give us a call to ask question or schedule a visit.

In our fully featured Arbor Hills Pilates studio, we are able to offer various Pilates experiences, including mat, reformer, and tower Pilates exercises. Our mat Pilates classes are great for any amount of Pilates experience. Our classically trained Pilates instructors will take you through the system of exercises with a focus on the six Pilates principles: control, concentration, centering, precision, flow and breath. Whether it’s your first class or you’ve been practicing Pilates for years, our instructors will offer modifications throughout to help tailor the workout to each individual.

In addition to our mat classes, we also offer two types of Pilates apparatus classes: reformer and tower. Our Pilates Reformer classes have a small capacity (only 3 people maximum) which gives you a private training feeling and more one-on-one attention from your instructor. The reformer is a unique apparatus in which the carriage in which you lay on actually moves back and forth, making the exercises challenging and new. We require three private sessions before joining a class to ensure you are trained in using the apparatus safely. In our tower classes, you are equipped with your own tower during a 50-minute semi-private class (6 people maximum). This exercise works the abs, arms and legs, with the help of resistance springs and bars, challenging and facilitating the movement.
In any of our Pilates programs, you will learn how to move more smoothly and develop better posture. Compared to traditional workout routines, this is a low-impact exercise that works perfectly no matter how old or how young you are. Our passionate team of mentors will be very happy to discuss with you the advantages of choosing this routine over other exercise programs.

We are a growing family of fitness enthusiasts and health conscious individuals. You will surely feel at home in our cozy studio and enjoy working out with like-minded people who are highly motivated to attain their goals. Whether you choose to work with a group of people or to schedule a private session with one of our instructors, our supportive family is here to guide you all the way.
